A new banking law for Belgium

Banking law - credit institutions
Belgium is on the verge of enacting a new banking law.

The main proposed changes of the draft text which still has to be accepted by the Belgian Parliament, have been presented Monday 20/1/2014 by the Minister of Finance Koen Geens at a conference organized by Febelfin ("Twenty years later: a new banking law for a solid banking sector").

The Minister addressed the new rules regarding governance (introduced to ensure better risk monitoring), the protection of depositors / savings (new general legal privilege on moveable assets, introduction of an asset encumbrance ratio) and regarding the prohibition on trading for own account by credit institutions.
